George was born at Woodstock Farm
in the village of Goldenhill, near Kidsgrove, Staffordshire, in 1910. When he
was seventeen the family settled at Cubley Carr Farm, near Sudbury in
Derbyshire and George said that many of the songs he sang, including the
ancient ballad ‘Lankin’, were learned while milking their cows by hand.
