ENB31 THE BRIGHTEST OF ENTERTAINERS   Contents

Jig dolls are fascinating and elusive; they are dolls, puppets, toys, wooden artefacts, elements of social history, and percussion instruments. They feature in folk art, local history, and traditional music.
This eagerly awaited revised and expanded edition of the seminal work on jig dolls by Rennie and Pat Pickles (1988) has twice the number of pages in the original book and more than three times the number of illustrations, the majority now being reproduced in full colour. A bibliography and an index have been added.
Following Rennie's death in 1987, Pat continued to amass information and images from a huge range of sources, and eventually found an ally in Katie Howson, then Artistic Director of the East Anglian Traditional Music Trust, who was both willing and ideally placed to help in Pat's wish to publish an expanded edition. Pat and Katie worked together on and off over several years, taming the torrent of new
material and shaping it into this new publication.
This edition pieces together a history from descriptions, printed references and museum examples from the British Isles and goes on to describe three case studies (Yorkshire, East Anglia, and the Seth Davy legend). Reaching beyond the British scene, it explores evidence of dancing dolls in Europe, the United States and Canada, Australia and Africa, and surveys commercially produced jig dolls and mechanical dancers. It ends with a round-up of recent developments and innovations before
handing on the task of further exploration to the next generation of jig doll enthusiasts.

ENB33 TEACH ME TO BE A SUMMER'S MORNING

Teach Me To Be A Summer's Morning is an intimate portrait of Lal Waterson (1943–1998) through a 15-track CD of very rare home demo recordings plus a hardback book of her writings, drawings, paintings, and stained glass.

Known primarily as a singer and songwriter, Lal Waterson is shown, through this beautiful accompanying new book, to be much more—a versatile and vibrant artist. The 15 songs on the CD confirm her stature as a songwriter of rare imagination, depth and rich beauty; combine this ability with the many drawings, paintings, thoughts and poems illustrated in the book and a clearer picture emerges of Lal's individual, tender, intense, complex but ultimately very human talents.

Teach Me To Be A Summer's Morning is curated by Lal's daughter Marry Waterson and offers a unique, intimate portrait of Lal , through a wonderful selection of her work from a life lived making sense of the world through music, words, and pictures.
