The Silent Majority

GREG RUSSELL & CIARAN ALGAR

The duo of Greg Russell & Ciaran Algar is one of the most significant success stories of the UK Folk scene in recent years. From their debut album (THE QUEEN’S LOVER) in 2012 to winning the BBC young Folk Award within months, winning the BBC Horizon Award (2014), a second acclaimed CD (THE CALL) followed by stunning DVD and now their third CD. The juxtaposition of Greg's powerful vocals and Ciaran's superb fiddle playing coupled with their relaxed stage presentation is the key to their success. They are also talented on assorted other instruments which they have used more on this new album revealing a new depth to their music. They have more guest musicians on this new album and this gives them a bigger sound. Their stature grows with each project, but despite the additions it remains very much a duo album.

PETE MORTON with FULL HOUSE

The two CDs of new material from Pete Morton - 'The Frapping & Ramblin' (FECD261) and 'Land of Time' (FECD269) - has refocussed attention on Pete's back catalogue of songs. Most of his earlier albums are either deleted or not easy to obtain and at gigs Pete often gets requests for a lot of his popular songs. Rather than trying to put together a compilation we decided to re-record some of his most popular songs. He is joined on the album by Full House, one of the most popular bands in the North-West of England and old mates who are very familiar with Pete's songs.

The Final Waltz

CIARAN ALGAR
Ciaran is a multi-instrumentalist (Fiddle, Guitar, Banjo, and Percussion) who is quickly becoming one of the most highly-regarded young musicians on the Folk circuit today. His playing has been described by fRoots as “engagingly empathetic and honest with a lovely tone” whilst Living Tradition magazine said he “exudes a life experience of a skill finely-honed from a myriad music sessions in a million bars”. Ciaran’s musical influences come from deep within the Irish tradition. This Irish connection led to Ciaran taking part in the Fleadhs run by Comhaltas, in which he was extremely successful. Over 8 years of competing, he won 20 regional titles, 12 British titles and 1 All Ireland title across various categories (Fiddle, Fiddle Slow Airs, Bodhran) all by the time he was 16 years old! Ciaran is best known for his work with Gre Russell (two albums and a DVD on Fellside, but this is his first album under his own name. The Final Waltz is influenced by many different artists over many different genres of music, which produces a fairly unique style. Three of the four songs on the album are self-penned. The main vocalist in the band is up and coming singer, Sam Kelly, runner up in Britain’s Got Talent and now a serious Folk musician. The majority of the album, however, is instrumental. Rather than recording every tune set with fiddle and guitar and producing a really traditional-sounding album, Ciaran has created a band for the album and for touring.

PETE MORTON

Pete Morton returns with his second CD for Fellside. Of his previous album (FECD261) Mojo magazine said "[Pete Morton's] as animated as ever, blending politics, love songs, barbed asides and humour" and fRoots commented "he delivers a stimulating album of lasting quality". This new album is more along the same lines: more folk rapping, insightful ballads and beautiful love songs. He sings from the heart with songs the tell compelling stories and speak of the human condition from a very unique perspective whilst remaining rooted in the folk tradition.

Let the Wind Blow High or Low
JIMMY ALDRIDGE & SID GOLDSMITH
A debut album by two artists Jimmy Aldridge and Sid Goldsmith who play traditional and original folksongs of the British Isles held together with driving banjo and guitar arrangements and close vocal harmonies.Their music reflects the diversity of voices within the folk and acoustic world. They weave traditional English folksong with Irish, Scottish and American tunes, and their own compositions draw on many different styles. The stories are varied but there is a common thread of political struggle and resistance, and the decline of the industries that were the backbone of England for many generations. Jimmy and Sid both work towards environmental protection, Sid in traditional forestry and Jimmy as an environmental campaigner, and the political elements of these pursuits inform much of their music.

The Call
GREG RUSSELL & CIARAN ALGAR

“The press coverage and folk club reports have been glowing and rightly so” R2 Magazine “Greg Russell plays and sings with a maturity and emotion that belies his tender years.” Mark Radcliffe BBC Radio 2 It’s been two years since the release of Greg Russell and Ciaran Algar’s previous, and debut, release – The Queen’s Lover (FECD251). A lot has happened in that time. In 2013 the duo won the Young Folk Award and a year later picked up the Horizon Award, both at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. Musically, the pair have continued to develop their sound, adding instruments and gaining an increased maturity and understanding of music whilst receiving great acclaim for their live performances. Despite all the change and development, however, Greg Russell and Ciaran Algar have taken the same fundamental approach to The Call as they did The Queen’s Lover. The duo has created an album which features music from a wide range of sources. Some traditional songs are included, songs from contemporary song writers also and indeed some original material, but underpinning it all is a desire to create an album which is true to their energetic and considered live performances.

In Your Own Time
HADRIAN'S UNION
Stew Simpson has spent the last 10 years developing his art as a songwriter. He saw fiddle player Danny Hart play a Showcase spot at Bramton Live and that resulted in the birth of a duo. For recordings and the occasional 'live' gig they are joined by fretless bassist, Mike France. The songs are ‘contemporary folk songs’ about the world we live in today based on traditional subjects like politics, love, work and observations of people. They are not quasi traditional songs, but songs written in a distinctive style which lifts them above countless other songs which attempt to follow a similar path. ‘The Crack’ magazine noted “the pair weave many a tale and put plenty of passion behind it too, making for an utterly compelling listen”.

GREG RUSSELL & CIARAN ALGAR
“Greg Russell plays and sings with a maturity and emotion that belies his tender years. It is so rare to find new performers who have the confidence to play with this delicacy of touch and yet to sing in such a heartfelt way. He will, I think, go far”. These comments by BBC Radio 2’s Mark Radcliffe give a very accurate summary of 19 year old Greg. The power and conviction in his delivery is compelling and his teaming up with someone so formidably talented as 16 year old Ciaran bodes well for the future. They combine to provide an accomplished stage presence and come across as likeable performers which translated into the studio setting. Ciaran Algar is a member of the Young Folk Award semi finalist band Tri. Together they draw on a range of influences to create exciting music both with energy and also with delicate feeling when tackling, traditional material, songs by accomplished songwriters as well as their own songs and tunes.

MARTIN CARTHY & DAVE SWARBRICK

Two icons of the English Folk Revival, Martin Carthy and Dave Swarbrick have had a huge influence individually, as a duo or as individual members of the seminal Folk Rock bands, Steeleye Span and Fairport Convention. In between they have notched up memorable contributions to an array of different groups and projects. Perhaps, though, they will be most remembered for their duo formed in the 1960s, resurrected in 1989 and which has been an on-going occasional outing ever since. What is remarkable is their intuitive almost telepathic connection on stage. This creates a tension and excitement for the audience and really comes to the fore in a ‘live’ setting. This set of ‘live’ performances garnered from various concerts on three continents from 1989 to 1996 perfectly illustrates this. This year sees them celebrating their 70th birthdays.

She came from Georgia in the USA and much of her repertoire came from her family. She stayed in England for a few years, established herself of the European scene and recorded three LPs for the Topic label. All three are contained here. She sings accompanied by her 5-string banjo. It followed the closure of great swathes of the UK railway system and the passing of steam locomotives. Some 17 years later he produced a follow-up, The Man Who Put The Engine In The Chip Shop' which was a much more positive affair following the setting up of many steam preservation groups. This CD combines the two LPs and is enhanced with actuality railway recordings.

Out of Bed

THE WITCHES OF ELSWICK

They are four young women who deliver excellent unaccompanied harmony singing, which is reminiscent of the heyday of groups such as the Young Tradition, Cockersdale etc. They aren't on any nostalgia trip though and offer fresh but never gimmicky arrangements - that's the Witches, and that's what the CD captures, and is all the more welcome because of the relative dearth of such groups on today's scene.

ALISTAIR McCULLOCH

Alistair’s fiddling spans a broad swathe of the traditional territories - classic bagpipe sets Shetland airs, French Canadian and North American tunes, as well as the many Scottish styles. His fiddling is taut and bright, with his own unique soundpoint evident in each piece. From good-going reels, through march, strathspey and reel, to slow air and hornpipe, Alastair is well at home in the style. He also plays whistle and viola, and has included some of his own compositions on this CD; his Kevoc Cottages is a particularly atmospheric piece, with a very laid-back piano accompaniment.

Blues in the Back Yard JOHNNY SILVO & DIZ DISLEY

The folk scene owes a great debt to the old folk entertainers of the 1960s. Not only did they gig hard, attracting many people to the glories of folk music, but they were often the hardest workers when it came to clubs and concerts. Still plenty of rock to be heard though and you can bet that if, as Rick hopes, the band get to play live after the release of the third album, they’ll give you a damn good night out!

No Bed of Roses

SISTERS UNLIMITED

Highlights of this superb album are topped by a very moving "Women O' Dundee" (written by Sheena Wellington), not far behind is the traditional "Collier's Lassie" and a really earthy version (led by Janet Russell) of the Sweet Honey in the Rock original "More Than A Paycheck". The Irish lament "A Star Mo Chroi" is sung with heart-breaking feeling by Peta Webb, Sandra Kerr gives us a delightful dollop of nostalgic with "Mrs Joan Lias"; a smile or two from Rosie Davie's music hall "My Rebellious Adolescent".

MARTYN WYNDHAM-READ

Musically, the album knocks most others into a corked hat, as you would expect from accompaniment by the Fellside house band featuring such names as Jez Lowe, Chris Leslie, Linda Adams, Rosie Cross and Iris Bishop and Martin's voice is still as superb 30 years on. He mentions the "old wine in new bottles" line; this is indeed vintage stuff.
