PETER BELLAMY Peter Bellamy made a name for himself setting Rudyard Kipling's poems to music and turning them into rather fine songs. Most of Peter's settings have appeared on CD now, but his classic collection of the Barrack Room ballads has never been reissued in its entirety. Fellside acquired the rights to the master tapes and now presents it in full with the aded bonus of a further selection Peter was working on when he died. A DOUBLE CD FOR THE PRICE OF ONE.

![]() FECD243 WALNUT CREEK MARTIN CARTHY & DAVE SWARBRICK Two icons of the English Folk Revival, Martin Carthy and Dave Swarbrick have had a huge influence individually, as a duo or as individual members of the seminal Folk Rock bands, Steeleye Span and Fairport Convention. In between they have notched up memorable contributions to an array of different groups and projects. Perhaps, though, they will be most remembered for their duo formed in the 1960s, resurrected in 1989 and which has been an on-going occasional outing ever since. What is remarkable is their intuitive almost telepathic connection on stage. This creates a tension and excitement for the audience and really comes to the fore in a ‘live’ setting. This set of ‘live’ performances garnered from various concerts on three continents from 1989 to 1996 perfectly illustrates this. This year sees them celebrating their 70th birthdays.

![]() FECD242 THE BOLDEST BLOOD ELBOW JANE Having picked up plaudits such as "One of the top acoustic acts in the country" (R2), "A thinking man's band that has plenty to say" (Maverick)and "Three fine songwriters...highly skilled instrumental work" (fRoots), Elbow Jane return with their second album for Fellside. Their trademark vibrant sound and soaring harmonies are well to the fore on this set of new songs and given that they've got "two of the best male singers around" (Properganda) what more could you ask for?

![]() FECD241 BALLADS & SONGS FROM THE APPALACHIANS HEDY WEST Double CD for the price of one. Hedy West was among the best women singers of the American folksong revival. She came to prominence in the middle 1960s. Writers of the time hailed her as “among the most talented and accomplished of our young folk singers” and also commented “there are very few female singers in the English-speaking world who can equal Hedy West for general level of performance”. She came from Georgia in the USA and much of her repertoire came from her family. She stayed in England for a few years, established herself of the European scene and recorded three LPs for the Topic label. All three are contained here. She sings accompanied by her 5-string banjo. From classic ‘big’ ballads like ‘Little Matty Groves’ to lightweight ditties she displays consummate skill. Although she remained active until her death in 2005 (aged 67) she made her last album in 1980.

Nominated for the Horizon Award (Best Newcomers) in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. Pilgrims’ Way, an arresting new young trio, are stamping their feisty, refreshing take on trad folk firmly on the roots scene. The innovative acoustic hail from the northwest of England are bound together not only by musical roots - but also red hair! The line-up comprises the distinctive, captivating vocals of a new face on the scene, Lucy Wright, who is also a fine Jews’ harp player. Lucy has joined forces with fiddler Tom Kitching, a former BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards finalist. Probably best known as one half of a duo with singer-songwriter/guitarist Gren Bartley, Tom has been described by Living Tradition magazine as “one of the best young fiddlers in Britain” and also plays a mean mandolin. The third “pilgrim” is inventive box player Edwin Beasant -an incorrigible and talented multi-instrumentalist, who also plays guitar and bass and had a stint as drummer.

422 It is eleven years since 422 won the 1999 BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award. The reasons for winning were obvious with comments like the one from Folk On Tap magazine “their playing is excellent, the arrangements, inventive, the choice of tunes interesting and the whole imbued with the drive and energy of youth”. They went on to make three albums the last one being in 2005. In the meantime individually and collectively they have collected degrees and a raft of other band experiences including the Kathryn Tickell Band, Baltic Crossing, The Hut People, Alistair Anderson’s Steel Skies various ceilidh bands and numerous one-off collaborations. Add to this teaching, tutoring and producing albums for other people. Having concentrated on playing ceilidhs they are back playing concerts. This wealth of experience has been brought to bear on the new album.

Maverick magazine described the duo as “an excellent twinning of two outstanding rising talents” and fRoots proclaimed that “the future looks bright for Tom and Gren”. Their new album is a result of them have gaining in maturity of performance through working together. Yet their music remains understated and delightfully unabashed.

DAVE GOULDER In 1971 Dave Goulder, a former railway worker turned songwriter, released an LP entitled 'Requiem For Steam'. It followed the closure of great swathes of the UK railway system and the passing of steam locomotives. Some 17 years later he produced a follow-up, The Man Who Put The Engine In The Chip Shop' which was a much more positive affair following the setting up of many steam preservation groups. This CD combines the two LPs and is enhanced with actuality railway recordings.

For the new CD Bram presents a varied collection of songs by lesser known songwriters as well as established ones.

THE WITCHES OF ELSWICK They are four young women who deliver excellent unaccompanied harmony singing, which is reminiscent of the heyday of groups such as the Young Tradition, Cockersdale etc. They aren't on any nostalgia trip though and offer fresh but never gimmicky arrangements - that's the Witches, and that's what the CD captures, and is all the more welcome because of the relative dearth of such groups on today's scene.

Alistair’s fiddling spans a broad swathe of the traditional territories - classic bagpipe sets Shetland airs, French Canadian and North American tunes, as well as the many Scottish styles. His fiddling is taut and bright, with his own unique soundpoint evident in each piece. From good-going reels, through march, strathspey and reel, to slow air and hornpipe, Alastair is well at home in the style. He also plays whistle and viola, and has included some of his own compositions on this CD; his Kevoc Cottages is a particularly atmospheric piece, with a very laid-back piano accompaniment.

DR FAUSTUS Dr Faustus are four very talented young men who have revived a lot of folk songs and melodies, imbuing them with a clean contemporary touch which has, nevertheless, a strong medieval tone! ANDY MAY Northumbrian Smallpipes This champion young Northumbrian piper is tipped as the obvious successor to Kathryn Tickell when she hangs up her feather bonnet. Nine times open championship winner, Andy May is still only in his twenties but he's just old enough to have caught the tail end of pre-revival piping in Northumberland. He cites Billy Pigg and Tom Clough as major influences, and there are numerous echoes of Charltons, Armstrongs and other great piping families here.

422 A very bright and breezy release from this young group with strong Scandinavian and cross-pond influences. Two fiddles, accordion, guitar, whistles and oboe provide a full sound which translates easily into a more European styling and a strong feeling of authenticity for the numbers from other traditions. Scandinavian folk swing, flying Shetland reels, an American hornpipe, Canadian and Irish tunes, and a Kuwaiti one! Very talented, and contemporary in the bouncy manner. £11.99 Add to Basket

The folk scene owes a great debt to the old folk entertainers of the 1960s. Not only did they gig hard, attracting many people to the glories of folk music, but they were often the hardest workers when it came to clubs and concerts. The nucleus of Rick’s music is a trio combo delivering good rock well played. Within the hour this album plays ( the length a sure sign they are enjoying themselves) you will hear elements of Dire Straits and Deep Purple in a fusion that can also take in an almost Roy Harper type style on ‘Great Divide’. Still plenty of rock to be heard though and you can bet that if, as Rick hopes, the band get to play live after the release of the third album, they’ll give you a damn good night out !
