THE WITCHES OF ELSWICK
They are four young women who
deliver excellent unaccompanied harmony singing, which is reminiscent of the
heyday of groups such as the Young Tradition, Cockersdale etc. They aren't on
any nostalgia trip though and offer fresh but never gimmicky arrangements -
that's the Witches, and that's what the CD captures, and is all the more welcome
because of the relative dearth of such groups on today's scene.

FECD179 WIRED UP ALISTAIR McCULLOCH
Alistair’s fiddling spans a broad swathe of the traditional territories - classic bagpipe sets Shetland airs, French Canadian and North American tunes, as well as the many Scottish styles. His fiddling is taut and bright, with his own unique soundpoint evident in each piece. From good-going reels, through march, strathspey and reel, to slow air and hornpipe, Alastair is well at home in the style. He also plays whistle and viola, and has included some of his own compositions on this CD; his Kevoc Cottages is a particularly atmospheric piece, with a very laid-back piano accompaniment.

NO BED OF ROSES SISTERS UNLIMITED
Highlights of this superb album are topped by a very moving "Women O' Dundee" (written by Sheena Wellington), not far behind is the traditional "Collier's Lassie" and a really earthy version (led by Janet Russell) of the Sweet Honey in the Rock original "More Than A Paycheck". The Irish lament "A Star Mo Chroi" is sung with heart-breaking feeling by Peta Webb, Sandra Kerr gives us a delightful dollop of nostalgic with "Mrs Joan Lias"; a smile or two from Rosie Davie's music hall "My Rebellious Adolescent".

SUNLIT PLAINS MARTYN WYNDHAM-READ
Musically, the album knocks most others into a corked hat, as you would expect from accompaniment by the Fellside house band featuring such names as Jez Lowe, Chris Leslie, Linda Adams, Rosie Cross and Iris Bishop and Martin's voice is still as superb 30 years on. He mentions the "old wine in new bottles" line; this is indeed vintage stuff.

FECD92 FURTHER HORIZONS BRAM TAYLOR
Bram Taylor is no stranger to the recording studio and "Further Horizons" is his fourth solo album. Not that he would have felt lonely recording these fifteen tracks since he has several musicians including Fiona Simpson, Tom McConville, Chris Lee and the Fellside "boss" himself, Paul Adams, keeping him company.
