FECD221 THE GOLDEN DAYS OF STEAM DAVE GOULDER 

In 1971 Dave Goulder, a former railway worker turned songwriter, released an LP entitled 'Requiem For Steam'. It followed the closure of great swathes of the UK railway system and the passing of steam locomotives. Some 17 years later he produced a follow-up, The Man Who Put The Engine In The Chip Shop' which was a much more positive affair following the setting up of many steam preservation groups. This CD combines the two LPs and is enhanced with actuality railway recordings.

Graham Pirt started singing in the 1960s and is featured on several Fellside CDs as a member of Cockersdale. He is also director of Whitby Folk Festival. Recently he has been undertaking more solo work as well as working with his son, Sam. Sam also features on several Fellside CDs as a member of 422. Sam is regarded as one of the best accordion players of his generation. Between them they present a selection of songs from Graham's native north east of England plus some tunes from further afield.

From good-going reels, through march, strathspey and reel, to slow air and hornpipe, Alastair is well at home in the style. He also plays whistle and viola, and has included some of his own compositions on this CD; his Kevoc Cottages is a particularly atmospheric piece, with a very laid-back piano accompaniment.
