IN YOUR OWN TIME
HADRIAN'S UNION
Stew Simpson has spent the last 10 years developing his art as a songwriter. He saw fiddle player Danny Hart play a Showcase spot at Bramton Live and that resulted in the birth of a duo. For recordings and the occasional 'live' gig they are joined by fretless bassist, Mike France. The songs are ‘contemporary folk songs’ about the world we live in today based on traditional subjects like politics, love, work and observations of people. They are not quasi traditional songs, but songs written in a distinctive style which lifts them above countless other songs which attempt to follow a similar path. ‘The Crack’ magazine noted “the pair weave many a tale and put plenty of passion behind it too, making for an utterly compelling listen”.

THE QUEEN'S LOVER

GREG RUSSELL & CIARAN ALGAR
“Greg Russell plays and sings with a maturity and emotion that belies his tender years. It is so rare to find new performers who have the confidence to play with this delicacy of touch and yet to sing in such a heartfelt way. He will, I think, go far”. These comments by BBC Radio 2’s Mark Radcliffe give a very accurate summary of 19 year old Greg. The power and conviction in his delivery is compelling and his teaming up with someone so formidably talented as 16 year old Ciaran bodes well for the future. They combine to provide an accomplished stage presence and come across as likeable performers which translated into the studio setting. Ciaran Algar is a member of the Young Folk Award semi finalist band Tri. Together they draw on a range of influences to create exciting music both with energy and also with delicate feeling when tackling, traditional material, songs by accomplished songwriters as well as their own songs and tunes.

FECD247SONGS TO SCYTHE BACK THE OVERGROWN
GREN BARTLEY

Gifted singer songwriter Gren Bartley carved himself a name in a duo with former BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards nominee Tom Kitching (see FECDs 202 & 222), with Maverick magazine describing them as “an excellent twinning of two outstanding rising talents.” Gren Bartley is now striking out solo (Tom is now a member of Pilgrims's Way - FECD239), tapping into his rich and prolific song writing reserves and effortlessly bridging the Atlantic divide with an acoustic spectrum ranging from English folk to moody American blues. The 13-track album is a significant showcase for his sensitive and sometimes quirky song writing. The genre-hopping album demonstrates Bartley’s strong, maturing voice alongside his acclaimed acoustic finger-picking guitar.

FECD243 WALNUT CREEK

MARTIN CARTHY & DAVE SWARBRICK

Two icons of the English Folk Revival, Martin Carthy and Dave Swarbrick have had a huge influence individually, as a duo or as individual members of the seminal Folk Rock bands, Steeleye Span and Fairport Convention. In between they have notched up memorable contributions to an array of different groups and projects. Perhaps, though, they will be most remembered for their duo formed in the 1960s, resurrected in 1989 and which has been an on-going occasional outing ever since. What is remarkable is their intuitive almost telepathic connection on stage. This creates a tension and excitement for the audience and really comes to the fore in a ‘live’ setting. This set of ‘live’ performances garnered from various concerts on three continents from 1989 to 1996 perfectly illustrates this. This year sees them celebrating their 70th birthdays.

FECD241 BALLADS & SONGS FROM THE APPALACHIANS HEDY WEST

Double CD for the price of one. Hedy West was among the best women singers of the American folksong revival. She came to prominence in the middle 1960s. Writers of the time hailed her as “among the most talented and accomplished of our young folk singers” and also commented “there are very few female singers in the English-speaking world who can equal Hedy West for general level of performance”. She came from Georgia in the USA and much of her repertoire came from her family. She stayed in England for a few years, established herself of the European scene and recorded three LPs for the Topic label. All three are contained here. She sings accompanied by her 5-string banjo. From classic ‘big’ ballads like ‘Little Matty Groves’ to lightweight ditties she displays consummate skill. Although she remained active until her death in 2005 (aged 67) she made her last album in 1980.

A. L. LLOYD

Double CD for the price of one. A L Lloyd, was one of the architects of the UK Folk Revival in the 1950s. He was a writer, broadcaster, folk song collector, folklorist, artistic director of Topic Records and mentor to many aspiring folk musicians. He was also a noted performer in his own right. In the early 1950s he set about recording English versions of the great Folk Ballads to be found in Francis J Child’s five volume monumental work ‘English & Scottish Popular Ballads’. The complete set of recordings is on this double CD collection. It is handsomely packaged with an extended booklet written by Dr Vic Gammon, former Director of the Folk Music Degree course at Newcastle University, which gives a fascinating insight to the ballads and Lloyd’s singing of them.

Probably best known as one half of a duo with singer-songwriter/guitarist Gren Bartley, Tom has been described by Living Tradition magazine as “one of the best young fiddlers in Britain” and also plays a mean mandolin. JAMES FINDLAY
James Findlay walked away with the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award title on Friday 4th December 2009. Amongst a stunning group of finalists James' amazing voice and distinctive guitar and fiddle style stood out. He is influenced by all genres of music, but his love lies in traditional English folk music and ballads and in a short space of time he has developed a stage presence all of his own. As well as the Young Folk Award James was the winner in the ‘New Roots’ national competition for up-and-coming folk performers in 2008. Judging the Young Folk Awards Bellowhead’s Jon Boden exclaimed, “Bloody hell, what a voice!' was my first thought as he launched into his two songs. He's warmly charismatic with that sparkle of personality that draws a crowd along with him.” This is James’ debut album on a major Folk label.

FECD180 OUT OF BED

THE WITCHES OF ELSWICK

They are four young women who deliver excellent unaccompanied harmony singing, which is reminiscent of the heyday of groups such as the Young Tradition, Cockersdale etc. They aren't on any nostalgia trip though and offer fresh but never gimmicky arrangements - that's the Witches, and that's what the CD captures, and is all the more welcome because of the relative dearth of such groups on today's scene.

FECD179 WIRED UP ALISTAIR McCULLOCH

Alistair’s fiddling spans a broad swathe of the traditional territories - classic bagpipe sets Shetland airs, French Canadian and North American tunes, as well as the many Scottish styles. His fiddling is taut and bright, with his own unique soundpoint evident in each piece. From good-going reels, through march, strathspey and reel, to slow air and hornpipe, Alastair is well at home in the style. He also plays whistle and viola, and has included some of his own compositions on this CD; his Kevoc Cottages is a particularly atmospheric piece, with a very laid-back piano accompaniment.

FECD178 NORTH FOLKESTRA
They may be a bunch of kids, but what kids, and what a bunch! The 14 members of the ensemble hail from all over the North of England, and meet in Gateshead, under the musical direction of Kathryn Tickell. Aged between 14 and 19, they play whistle, banjo, flute, cello, fiddle, guitar, accordion, Northumbrian pipes, baritone horn, percussion, bass guitar, harp and viola; vocals by two of the lasses, as well. A really enjoyable album with a very strong musical sense of place.

FECD177 THE FIRST CUT

DR FAUSTUS

Dr Faustus are four very talented young men who have revived a lot of folk songs and melodies, imbuing them with a clean contemporary touch which has, nevertheless, a strong medieval tone! Songs from Northumberland to Dorset, thematic variants on well-known songs, gentle melodies with a good beat and clear singing voices. Between them they play fiddle, oboe, harmonica, bouzouki, guitar, English concertina, bassoon and melodeon, and are well worth listening to.

FECD174 THE YELLOW HAIRED LADDIE

ANDY MAY Northumbrian Smallpipes

This champion young Northumbrian piper is tipped as the obvious successor to Kathryn Tickell when she hangs up her feather bonnet. Nine times open championship winner, Andy May is still only in his twenties but he's just old enough to have caught the tail end of pre-revival piping in Northumberland. He cites Billy Pigg and Tom Clough as major influences, and there are numerous echoes of Charltons, Armstrongs and other great piping families here.

FECD172 TAKING ROUTES

SIMON HAWORTH

Not a ‘folky’ album , but still very much in the tradition, with Simon Howarth playing old songs and his own songs. Simon’s deft and lively guitar playing lifts the old songs from being oft-repeated standards to being well worth a proper listen. Vocals by Terry Howarth, with Andy May on Northumbrian pipes, whistles, piano and keyboard, with cittern, mandolin, accordion, cello and other vocalists giving this album a rounded sound.

FECD171 NEW NUMBERS

422

A very bright and breezy release from this young group with strong Scandinavian and cross-pond influences. Two fiddles, accordion, guitar, whistles and oboe provide a full sound which translates easily into a more European styling and a strong feeling of authenticity for the numbers from other traditions. Scandinavian folk swing, flying Shetland reels, an American hornpipe, Canadian and Irish tunes, and a Kuwaiti one! Very talented, and contemporary in the bouncy manner.

The folk scene owes a great debt to the old folk entertainers of the 1960s. Not only did they gig hard, attracting many people to the glories of folk music, but they were often the hardest workers when it came to clubs and concerts. This album contains fifteen tracks, including "Easy Rider", "Pallet on the Floor", "St Louis Blues" and "Frankie and Johnny". Uncomplicated and pleasant, like the paperback you read when you are too tired to wade into Tolstoy.

Still plenty of rock to be heard though and you can bet that if, as Rick hopes, the band get to play live after the release of the third album, they’ll give you a damn good night out !
